We’ve been going through the book of Ephesians and have almost come to the end of chapter 1. But today I want to take a break away from Ephesians to comment on something I heard on the radio this morning (Sunday morning).
The local Christian radio station here in Seattle had asked the question, “What is the greatest thing about being a Christian?” They had invited listeners to call in and leave a message answering the question. This morning, the streamed several of the answers into one sound bite.
Some of the answers were pretty good. One person commented on the privilege of leading someone to Christ. another commented on knowing he will go to heaven. But what got me was one lady speaking of the privilege of seeing a beautiful sunrise every day.
With all due respect, if you think that the beauty of a sunrise is the greatest thing about being a Christian, then you are missing the boat. Perhaps this lady needs to be reminded of what being a Christian is all about.
To me, the greatest thing about being a Christian is knowing that my sins are forgiven because Christ has paid for my redemption. It is knowing that I am justified and have peace with God. It is the fact that I have been born of the Spirit and am a child of God. It is the fact that I am indwelt by the Holy Spirit, who was given to me as a guarantee of my future inheritance, and that I am preserved by His power. In short, the greatest thing about being a Christian is…being a Christian!
